Our room was clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was excellent. The hotel is just a short walk to the beach and town centre although we found it a bit disconcerting when we crossed the road outside the hotel as the friendly security guard would stop the traffic for us! Talk about being treated like royalty! Probably not suitable for wheelchairs as there are two short flights of stairs to reach the lift for the higher floors.

Phuket Events & Festivals 2012

Planning your holiday to coincide with one of Phuket's many events and festivals could make all the difference between a good holiday and a really memorable one. There are important events scattered throughout the year, so check if your visit to Phuket will coincide with anything you'd be interested in.

The Vegetarian Festival, which takes place in late September, is the most famous and spectacular of these. However, there are events throughout the year. Songkran, in April, is the Thai new year but is also an excuse for a huge water fight. While Loi Krathong, in November is a more subdued but magical festival.

wat chalong phuket Wat Chalong (or Chalong Temple) Fair is probably the biggest of all temple fairs on the island. It was first started in 1933 by local farmers who lived near and around Wat Chalong.
After a long period of hard work and when the harvest was complete, they would get together and create a kind of fun fair on the temple’s grounds. In later years, they set up the fair during the Chinese New Year because they wanted to make sure that Thais with Chinese heritage would join in, too. The fair lasts seven days each year and is a colourful, crowded, aromatic, noisy but fascinating spectacle. Claustrophobic people stay away…

The main artists for 2012 included Chris Thomas King, who has sold more records and appeared in more successful films than any other blues artist this century. A singer and guitarist on the now classic ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou’ soundtrack, King found crossover fame as a successful actor in the Coen Brothers movie opposite George Clooney. Other newcomers will be from USA, UK and Asia in addition to returning acts Rich Harper (USA), John Meyer (Australia) and AkashA (Malaysia), all returning by popular demand. The festival features bicycle racing, a takraw (volleyball played with the feet) tournament, tug-o’-war, a mini-marathon as well as an uppasombot moo (Buddhist ordination) ceremony. The highlight of the festival is a spectacular historical show about the history of Phuket. Back over 200 years ago, two heroic sisters Thao Thep Krasatri and Thao Sri Suntorn rallied the islanders to defend Phuket from Burmese troops. The open-air play with a cast of 700 actors runs three nights, starting at 19:00 at the Thalang Victory Memorial Field.

The event caters mainly for locals but foreign visitors are encouraged to go along. The organizers invite nearby hotels to bring their guests to this free-entrance festival but an interpreter might be necessary to help you appreciate it better. Some are quite unique and rare that even new-generation Thais might never have experienced them before. Such activities include Thai boxing’s wai kru ceremony (a demonstration of respect and gratitude of boxers to their teachers), a sword dancing show, shadow puppet shows and traditional lullaby singing. Lots of local cuisine and ‘OTOP’ products (such as batik, silk and wooden decorative items) are on display and for sale at the fair, too.

Beginning on the 13th of April Thai people all over the country celebrate the Thai New Year, the most important holiday on the Thai calendar. The holiday is best known for revellers playfully splashing water on each other and dabing scented powder on each others faces as a new year blessing. Over the years this has escalated into a huge water fight where anyone is fair game People roam the streets armed with high pressure water pistols or stand by the side of the road with buckets and hoses, ready to drench any passer-by. If you venture out during this period, the 13th in particular, expect to get soaked! Traditionally, however, Songkran is a time of cleaning and renewal. During Songkran Thais perform religious rituals such as cleaning Buddha images, giving alms to the monks and going to the temple to pray. Songkran is also a time for families. Many people return home over the Songkran holiday and pay respect to their elders by sprinkling scented water over their hands. The festival is a 3-day public holiday.

September 2012

Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2012

Date: Late September/Early October - Dates to be Announced
Location: Chinese Shrines on the Island

There are vegetarian festivals elsewhere, but the Phuket festival is best known around the world. It takes place on the first day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar, usually in late September or early October. This festival originated when a troupe of Chinese performers visiting Phuket at the time when an epidemic was sweeping the island. The performers urged the locals to give up meat for seven days and showed them how to perform a number of rituals to purify themselves and appease the gods.

It worked. During the Vegetarian Festival the Taoist population, along with many Buddhists, don white clothing and abstain from meat, alcohol and sex. Street markets spring up serving a variety of vegetarian delicacies unique to the festival. Selected participants enter Chinese shrines and meditate until they enter an ecstatic trance and claim that they are possessed by spirits. While in this trance they perform amazing and fairly gruesome acts of self-mutilation.

Spectacles include climbing ladders made of knives, fire walking, and the incredible processions. The latter take place in the morning all over the island and involve entranced ma song (horses of the gods) piercing their faces with everything from spikes and knives to lawn furniture and bikes - some cut themselves with axes or swords as they walk.

Images of Chinese gods are carried through the streets and evil spirits are scared away with firecrackers by the thousands. Phuket Vegetarian festival 2011 dates: First week of October (tbc).

On this particular night, on nearly every expanse of water, be it a river, lake or the ocean, you'll notice thousands of lights drifting across the water like fairy dreams. Gently flickering, dipping and dancing in the breeze as they go, they make a spectacular sight.
All of Phuket's major west coast beaches take part in Loy Kratong festivities, with a mix of locals and tourists. Nai Harn (on the large lake) and Patong usually have the most activity with locals visiting beaches like Kata and Karon.
